Understanding Depth of Field & Hyperfocal Distance

Whether you are shooting cinematic video or landscape photography, mastering focus is essential. This tool uses standard optical formulas and Circle of Confusion (CoC) metrics to generate highly accurate focus ranges.

What is Hyperfocal Distance?

The hyperfocal distance is the closest distance at which a lens can be focused while keeping objects at infinity acceptably sharp. When the lens is focused at this distance, everything from half the hyperfocal distance out to infinity will be in focus. It is the ultimate technique for landscape photographers who want maximum front-to-back sharpness.

How Sensor Size Affects DOF

Different sensor formats (Full Frame, APS-C, Micro Four Thirds) have different Circle of Confusion (CoC) values. A larger sensor typically produces a shallower depth of field at an equivalent field of view and aperture, making it highly desirable for portrait and cinematic isolation.
